CAR INSURANCE

IS THIS THE END OF CAR INSURANCE?

This is a bit of a tongue in cheek question!

We all know that car insurance is a multi-million, if not multi-billion industry world wide. In some countries car insurance is mandatory for all drives, in other countries, like South Africa, you are lucky if the taxi that bashed you when it wasn’t even your fault, had proper tires, not to speak of insurance…

Recently Google showed a video of a demo where a blind guy was behind the wheel of a modified Toyota Prius. Not only are we eco-friendly, but we are self-drive too!

Google has been working on developing a self-drive car since 2010. In March 2012 the state of Nevada issued the first license for a driverless car and the license was issued to Google’s modified Toyota Prius. The car uses information for the Google Street view system, combined with video cameras inside the cars, photos being taken of the surroundings from the roof of the car, radar sensors and GPS positioning, all combined.

Google expects that the technology would help to prevent motor accidents. There are not plans in place yet for mass commercialisation of the car, but we live in an era where this type of technology is not science fiction any more, but could conceivably become real technology implemented in the not too far future.
